MNANGAGWA’S THIRD TERM PUSH IS A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s plan to stay in power beyond the allowed two terms is now out in the open. It is no longer a rumour. It is a bold, dangerous move that goes against Zimbabwe’s Constitution and everything democracy stands for. What we are seeing is a clear and shameless power grab by a leader who has failed to deliver and now fears losing control.

At a recent rally in Masvingo, Zanu PF’s provincial chairman, Robson Mavhenyengwa, led chants of “2030 vaMnangagwa vanenge vachipo!” which means “In 2030, Mnangagwa will still be in power.” This was not just empty noise. This was a signal. A signal that the regime wants to change the law and keep Mnangagwa in office illegally. This is how dictatorships are built—through stolen mandates, fake applause, and twisted laws.

Let’s be very clear: Zimbabwe’s Constitution does not allow a third term. Section 91(2) is simple. No one can be president for more than two terms. Mnangagwa was first elected in 2018. He was fraudulently re-elected in 2023. That’s two terms. It must end there.

To go for a third term, he would have to change the Constitution. But that’s not easy. He needs a two-thirds majority in Parliament and a national referendum. Why? Because the Constitution is supposed to protect the people from power-hungry leaders like him. It was written to stop exactly this kind of nonsense.

Mnangagwa knows this. He knows he doesn’t have enough seats in the Senate. That’s why Zanu PF has been busy recalling opposition MPs, attacking the CCC, and planting fake opposition leaders like Sengezo Tshabangu. This is not just political strategy. It is political sabotage—an attempt to kill democracy from inside Parliament.

Mnangagwa and Zanu PF are acting like Zimbabwe is their personal farm. They treat the Constitution like a piece of toilet paper. But Zimbabwe is not a kingdom. Mnangagwa is not a king. The presidency is not a family business. It is a public office with rules—and one of those rules is that you don’t get a third term. No matter how many songs you sing at rallies. No matter how many MPs you bribe. No matter how many fake opposition leaders you invent.

This is bigger than just one man wanting to rule until he dies. This is about the direction Zimbabwe is taking. Do we want to be like Uganda, where one man has ruled since 1986? Do we want to be like Equatorial Guinea or Cameroon, where elections are jokes and leaders die in office after 40 years of looting?

Or do we want real change? Do we want a country where power changes hands through the ballot, not bullets and bribes? A country where young people can dream of leading? A country where the Constitution means something?

The answer should be obvious. But Zanu PF has never respected the will of the people. Not in 1980, not in 2008, not in 2018, and certainly not now. They are scared. They know that if Mnangagwa leaves power, the truth will come out. The corruption, the abductions, the gold mafia, the stolen elections, the abuse of the courts—it will all come crashing down. That’s why they are desperate.

But Zimbabweans are watching. We are tired. We are angry. We are not fooled by slogans and staged rallies. We know what they are doing. And we will not be silent. We must speak out now—loudly, boldly, and with one voice. No third term. No constitutional fraud. No more lies.

The Constitution must stand. Zimbabwe must stand. And Mnangagwa must go.
